UNTITLED 1963

Received an inquiry earlier this week from a gentleman in the UK who was in the possession of an early 60s Parson's bronze. It is a great transitory piece that begins to inform much of the work created during the rest of this decade. The most surprising element is the lenticular shape that never again made an appearance. Excellent new entry.

HUDSON BAY Update

After many years of searching and email inquiries to the UA Museum of Art, the Tucson Pima Arts Council has finally presented some imagery befitting of HUDSON BAY. Thank you.

Prints

I spoke to Lyman a couple of weeks ago about the rolled prints that are so prevalent. During a dinner with some friends this evening, the hostess said, "I have to show you my little KIPP print". In the master bathroom, hanging to the left of the sink, was a little KIPP. See the UNTITLED print from 1969.

New Images

Beau sent some old photos of DOLLBABY and LEVENWORTH in situ at the now defunct Gulf Coast Art Museum in Pinewood Cultural Park near Largo, FL. Flickr and other sites never yielded any imagery but we are so glad to finally have a record now. If anyone has an idea where they ended up, please drop a line.

New Imagery

Special thanks to the Grand Rapids Art Museum for supplying images of the 4 pieces in their collection; BULLSHOALS, KOBI, OSHKOSH and ZEPHYR. I believe the ZEPHYR maquette is photographed in the wrong orientation based on the final piece that was displayed in the "Off the Pedestal" show in 1973. They also offered access to all of the documentation about the OTP Show so I plan to take full advantage of the opportunity. Hoping that there are a few installation photos that weren't published in the show catalog. Stay tuned.

Contact

Spoke to KIPP by phone this weekend and had a great conversation. Preparing a print-out for him from the site and expect to have some corrections and additions soon.
New maquettes and drawings are sprouting like Spring so hopefully there will be some new pieces to display this year.

Placid

I'm on the hunt again to determine the condition or fate of PLACID. I was conducting research this afternoon and came across another reference to it in Newman Park on the north shore of Mill Pond in Lake Placid. I have also seen references to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Google maps shows no such park and another satellite hunt provided no clues. I have a message in to the Parks Dept in Lake Placid. I sent some samples for reference so I hope they can tell me if it still exists.

Discovery

I have had a few comments about the missing entry of the piece in Fairbanks, AK. After a few quick emails today, the mystery is almost solved. "Chartreuse Jim" is standing outside the Fine Arts building on the Univ of Alaska campus and I was able to confirm its location but am waiting for metadata as well as a better image.
Here's the Google StreetMap view
Think HIGHLINE, SALUTE TO KNOWLEDGE and ZEPHYR
Made my day!

Adjustment

Added colorized versions of TAN, BULLFINCH, BADGE as this might make more sense to specify the importance of color in the work.
Received another image of SALUTE and added a gallery for it.

Site is live

The new look n feel was finally released this week and have had a few inquiries already. We posted the link to a few sculpture forums to alert artisans that KIPP is back!
We have solved the mystery of KIPP's whereabouts and several of my contacts have been in touch so we hope to get him involved in gathering much more data very soon.
Thanks again for all the input and once again, if you have any details or anecdotes about KIPP or one of his pieces, we welcome your data.

More images

I added a "more images" feature in order to allow each piece the ability to display up to 4 additional images. See Cherokee, Blue Smoke, Amarillo and Alto for examples.
I'm not thrilled about the solution as I was trying to do this w/o jscript or flash but in the end had to resort to "window.open"

Beta release

Sent out the sneak peek last night to a select few and have appreciated the feedback so far. I decided to crank out a text search for the WORK page this morning. I also added some pieces owned by Cranbrook. I'll most likely let this steep for a few days and will release it mid-week. At that point, I will go on a blitzkrieg with the URL. Viva la KIPP!

So close

I trimmed out the errant quotation marks and fixed the links that display when the WORK and HOME pages are initialized. There is an annoying flash after you click the link but I need to put that in the parking lot for now. I want to add an ARTICLES link in PUBLICATIONS but that is a parking lot item too.

I received a great note from Melissa Hartley at the Milwaukee Art Museum which included a couple of images of Bullfinch. I've been stalking this one for a while and to finally see it was a highlight of the day.

I also experimented a little this evening with an idea of creating stand-ins for work that doesn't have an image or the image has not been cleared by the owner. I would prefer to see the real objects on this site but in the meantime, I'm thinking about doing this:

Almost ready

Most of the pieces are building out but having some issue with targets within the iframes. Discovered "E" at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (thanks Shirley) and "Tan" from the Art in Process show.
Hope to have the site ready for select review by the end of the week.

More Edits

Had a few hours this weekend to code and adjust images. The WORK section is working now and added PUBLICATIONS section this morning...still working on ARTICLES. I have also decided to add a section for PUBLIC COLLECTIONS as opposed to just having the MAP. I am back filling photo credits so I need to look into most photos to determine where I found them years ago...hope to send out a preliminary release by this evening.

Coding continues...

I have continued to code an interface for the KIPP site. I like the artist sites that function as a one-stop source and also focus on the catalogue raisonne for a particular artist. Looking at sites by Koons, Ruscha, Caro and Hepworth for inspiration. Currently, the WORK will be driven by a flat file using PHP...makes it easy for anyone to maintain.
I'm still struggling with imagery. I feel that as long as a reciprocal link is provided and proper credit is given, why would interested people not want to share the imagery. To me, this is different than photography of people or places. When taking a photo of artwork, I struggle with who should "own" that photo. Maybe this is why most artists control those rights. I see a lot of folks on the web selling shots of sculpture without rights to do so.

Official Site Release

Finally bit the bullet and launched the official site so now the pressure is on.
I have to finalize the design to make sure it is dynamic enough for all devices and I need to settle on the format to display the information.
If you have other artists sites in mind that do this well, please send along a link.
This blog will feed into a news section of the site so i will make sure to keep the news coming as it pertains to KIPP and his work.
Sent him an introduction letter yesterday.
